Team Kirby Clash Deluxe is a video game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS, based on the Kirby: Planet RobobotAGW subgame mode 'Team Kirby Clash'.
Story
Monsters start to attack Dream Kingdom and it is up to Kirby and his team to defeat them and find who is behind this feud.
Bad Qualities
- It is one of the earliest instances of the freemium method from Nintendo, predating the mobile games from Nintendo such as Mario Kart Tour. In order to make any progress, you have to use Gem Apples which can only be accumulated by completing Hero Quests or waiting 12 hours to harvest them. Do note that you only get 5 Gem Apples per 12 hours without microtransactions, and the amount of Gem Apples needed to 100% the game is 13,441. Since you can only get 2,824 from Hero Quests, you must take 2 years or more to get the remaining 10,617 Gem Apples from harvesting to 100% the game without spending anything.
- Even if you use the password system to get more Gem Apples, you could only gain an additional 192 Gem Apples throughout the game's lifespan. The Japanese version of the game, however, has a lot more passwords that give Gem Apples when compared to the US or PAL version, but it is still a meager amount. Super Kirby Clash's Gem Apple system is a lot better than this game's, due to additional events released that could give even up to 100 Gem Apples.
- The vigor system is basically a stamina system, forcing players to wait or spend more Gem Apples just to refill when the player runs low on vigor.
- The game is a grindfest to achieve higher levels added on with the vigor system, you will be required to wait minutes to gain XP or be forced to spend Gem Apples to make progress.
- Extremely repetitive gameplay. You only use one of four copy abilities and simply fight various enemies until their health runs out or until the player fails from running out of health or letting the time expire. While it is interesting the first few battles, it eventually feels the same for a lot of the battles afterwards.
- Unlike other most Kirby games, there's a time limit on all battles, and you instantly lose if it expires. While it might be to prevent infinite stalling on bosses with high health at lower levels, it can still be considered artificial difficulty.
- Almost no replay factor after the player completes all of the quests and defeat the final boss. This is unacceptable for Kirby standards, in which most games often includes an extra game mode after completing the main story.
- Uninspired final boss, King D-Mind's moveset is entirely copied from Shadow Dedede's moveset in Kirby: Triple DeluxeAGW.
Good Qualities
- Its Switch remake, Super Kirby Clash is far better and much more forgiving than this game, as progress can be done faster with online play and the player gets Gem Apples at a faster rate. Namely, the inclusion of Party Quests, the News feature of the Switch, events given to Nintendo Switch Online members, and more inspiring bosses helped make Super Kirby Clash gain better reception and become less of a grindfest and less pay to win.
- It's nice to actually physically fight Taranza, whereas he was just a supporting antagonist back in Kirby: Triple Deluxe.
- It is free to play, so one can play this or Super Kirby Clash first to get a good feel on Kirby games before buying a Kirby game.
Reception
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe received mixed to negative reviews from critics and a mixed reception from fans.
